Week 1- What does Happiness mean to you?
This week is all about taking the time to get to the bottom of just what happiness means for you. Chances are if you are doing this program you have lost touch a little with just what makes you happy and you might be struggling with unhappiness. Rather than getting stuck on just what makes us lawyers unhappy, I am jumping straight to what makes you happy. I expect you can tell me really quickly what makes you unhappy- long hours, full inboxes, a lack of purpose, commercial pressure and a sense of ‘why am I doing this’ almost every day! You are not alone and if you want to learn more about what is making us lawyers unhappy you can read a blog I wrote about it last year here.
So this week I have a series of questions for you to ponder as you try and get to the bottom of just what it is that makes you happy.

Week 2- The Science of Happiness.
This week is all about science! Your workbook is much shorter but you have some reading and watching to do as we better understand the impact of things like stress on our brains. I am also hoping that by better understanding just how your brain works when it comes to happiness, we can focus over the next few weeks in better managing your mindset to give you the best chance of happiness.
The other ‘side benefit’ of this week’s learnings is that this brain science is applicable to anyone. Most of you are like me working with clients and colleagues who are often in a stressed state. When it comes to our clients, if we can better understand what is happening in their brains and bodies, we have a better chance of working out just how wee can best help them. Similarly the people you are surrounded with at work will often themselves be struggling because of the work they do or things in their lives- this week’s info will help you with them too!

Week 3- The first Habit of a Happy Lawyer ‘Health’
Welcome to Week 3 of the Happy Lawyer Happy Life course. I hope you are keeping up and now have a clearer understanding of just how your brain and body work in terms of happiness. I have found a deeper understanding of both neuroscience and psychology has really helped me better manage my own emotions and at the same time are skills I now use every day in my work.
I hope you are still reflecting on those happiness themes as they will come in handy as you work through this week’s workbook. We are starting on the 5 habits of a Happy Lawyer this week with the most important habit, ‘Health’. Health encapsulates 3 things for me this week-
- Fuel
- Movement
- Rest
As you work through the materials this week have that list of happiness themes close by to see if you can’t manage to work more of what makes you happy into this week’s exercises.

This week we are moving to the second habit of Happy Lawyers- Attitude. When I say Attitude I am talking about your Mindset- how you decide to interpret what happens to you. Whatever the world throws at you, you have a choice about how you let things affect your thoughts and your day. Attitude encompasses 3 things for me-
- How you think
- What you do
- How you feel
We can’t change how we feel if we keep thinking the same way and doing the same thing. We need to change how we think and what we do if we want to feel differently.
